Surviving the Wilderness

Surviving in the wilderness use to be part of everyday life. Although we are now protected in our cocoons of modern living it is still important to have experience will survival skills just in case something happens. Outdoor enthusiasts, sportsmen and backpackers have these skills because it is what they enjoy doing but for everyone else it should be a skill worth learning.

At this point you might be wondering what exactly are survival skills. Survival skills involves the know-how and techniques that will help you survive in hazardous conditions or dangerous locations. Skills like these could save your life if you are stuck in a storm or earthquake or if you are stranded in a desert, jungle, or mountains. Some of the skills you should learn include how to build a shelter, how to pack a survival kit, how to gain clean drinking water, and how to build a fire. These are universal skills that could help you no matter what the situation or circumstance. These universal skills will be able to help you survive in any situation you find yourself in

Next well will look at some of these skills and give you a better understanding what they consist of. The order of focus for survival skills relate to the basic human needs and the circumstance you find yourself in. Shelter is usually the first task to take on when you find yourself in a bad situation, this will give you protection from the harsh conditions. This is your immediate focus but if does not matter what the shelter consists of, it could be a lean-to or a poncho shelter.

The next important thing to surviving in the wilderness is getting drinking water. You can collect water in a number of ways. In the desert you can use condensation traps while in the jungle you could find water in the vines of trees or you could find a stream or river. Before any water should be considered drinkable you should bring it to a boil first.

The next survival skill we will look at is building a fire, you will not be able to boil your water unless you first build fire. Fire is necessary for protection and warmth, it can keep animals and insects away as well as dry your cloths and keep you warm at night. A fire will make your survival easier and more comfortable but a shelter is still more important in most situations.

Next we will look at a first aid kit. I recommend a survival book and a first aid kit in any survival bag, these could save your life should anything bad ever happen to you. Injuries need to be tended to before they get worse and could ruin any chance you have at surviving.
